Inspiring God’s People
“… the inspiration of the Almighty gives understanding.”
Job 32:8
Dear friends,
On Sunday during our service for Epiphany, when we received stars, my star for 2026 was “inspire.” I have been thinking about ways I can inspire the folks in our congregation this year regarding their individual faith journey and in their participation in the life and ministry of New Wappetaw.
Obliviously, communication and personal connection is the key. I have said many times in worship that one of the most important words in the gospels is the preposition “with.” Almost always when Jesus was doing ministry he took someone WITH him. As your pastor I want to be WITH you, not just in worship on Sundays but in the many ways we “show up” for special events in the life of the community and the church. Maybe it’s an oyster roast for the village museum or a Saturday work day here at the church; whatever is happening, you can count on me to show up. To ‘inspire” others I think we have to be present. We also have to be welcoming, taking the effort to really get to know those we share a common bond with.
As one who is “retired,” I have time to connect with you on your terms, so please don’t hesitate to invite me for lunch during the week or to share a table at TW Grahams on Sunday after church. And when you see my car in front of the church, stop by and visit, the door to my study is always open.
Inspiration works both ways, so know that I am inspired by the ministry that has taken place here for over 150 years and I so appreciate that so many of you have been in this church most of your lives. I’m inspired by your commitment and your service. I know it is hard to see change and to experience the rapid growth that is taking place at New Wappetaw, so be patient and keep the preacher and our congregation in your prayers this new year.
It is a joy to be your pastor.
Mike
