“Souper Bowl of Caring” and the Super Bowl

“I was hungry and you gave me something to eat” …

Matthew 25:35

Sunday, to recognize the Super Bowl we collected soup and those many cans of soup will be delivered this week to ECCO (East Cooper Community Outreach).

Some folks might take issue with the amount of money spent on the Super Bowl, from ticket sales to advertising, it’s hard to grasp just how much money Americans are willing to spend on a sporting event. But the good news is how much food is collected in cities across the country by churches and nonprofits in conjunction with the Super Bowl, to feed those in need. The Souper Bowl of Caring was founded in 1990 in Columbia, SC by someone I went to seminary with. Every year on Super Bowl Sunday I have made sure my congregation did some form of mission …collecting cans of soup, making soup, collecting money in big pots on the way out of worship, getting the youth involved… the ideas are limitless! What started out as a ‘local’ mission idea grew into a national movement in 1993 and is now run by the organization ’Tackle Hunger’.

Thank you for your generous donations, and for the Super Bowl, and I hope your team won. Although our congregation doesn’t take the Super Bowl nearly as serious as the Clemson/Carolina game!

Have a great week,

Mike
