Preparing for Lent
“Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and did not cover up my iniquity”
Psalm 32:5
Dear friends,
This week as we gather to receive ashes and begin 40 days of reflection on sin…our sin and the sin of the world, I am so grateful for being in a church that follows the seasons of the church year. Faith is not one-dimensional, so I appreciate the different seasons and the scripture readings and study that go with them. Yesterday was Transfiguration Sunday and we talked about the fact that even though it’s a great experience to be on the mountain top, eventually we have to come back down. I love Christmas when we focus our worship on joy, I love reflecting on the light of Epiphany and even though Lent is a somber, serious time in the church ( some folks don’t understand why the music during the 40 days of Lent isn’t so ‘up-lifting”) I believe those of us who take Lent seriously, find a deeper appreciation for Easter. And ordinary time gives us an opportunity to experience some or all of these special emotions and to study texts in scripture that are often overlooked. Or… maybe I just get bored easily and need constant change. Maybe that is why I love being in the church, where change is always taking place.
I hope you will make a special effort to join us in the sanctuary this Wednesday at 6:30 as we enter this new season on the church calendar
Grace and peace,
Mike
