Backpacks and Burdens

“… you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:30

Dear Friends,

On Sunday we invited the children to bring their backpacks for a blessing as the congregation offered up prayers for the new school year which begins tomorrow in Charleston County. We also prayed for our college students.

During the “blessing” I had my own backpack (my leather briefcase) that I carry to church and to all my meetings. It contains my Presbyterian planning calendar, my phone and I-pad, a notebook with “to do” lists, pens and books I’m reading, and sometimes my Bible.

Seeing all the children with these backpacks weighing them down reminds me of the burdens, the baggage that sometimes weighs us all down. I guess everyone at some time carries a burden that can seem overwhelming. When those burdensome times occur, I am so thankful that I have a church family that will get me through, and a faith in the one who “makes my burdens light.”

So, please include our students of all ages in your prayers this week and every week, and let’s all do what we can to ease their burdens as they carry those backpacks during this new school year.

• We will have refreshments on the lawn after worship this Sunday
• ALL adults involved in our children’s ministry need to have background checks and do the on-line training videos. Many of you have had the background check, but you need to do the training
