Saints at New Wappetaw
“Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly the saints”
Psalm 149:1
Greetings Friends,
We celebrated All Saints in worship yesterday, remembering those great Christians who have gone on before us. And that is GREAT!
However, the Psalmist describes saints as those who are still with us in the assembly or the public gathering. I mentioned in yesterday’s sermon that the Bible uses the phrase saints… 57 times but never is it used to designate any one particular person, and they are not always DEAD or departed. Paul addresses his letters to his churches saying, “to the saints at….”
That is good news because this church is literally alive and well. In the four years I have been back at the church, I have gone to the hospital less than a dozen times and some of those visits were for new babies. Even though we have two funerals this week for folks who have gone from the village for years, we have not had many deaths in this congregation since I have been here. So, it is a good thing to know that the title of saint can also refer to those Christians who are still alive, still serving the church, still STRIVING for sainthood. To the special folks who brought me snickers bars when they brought the Halloween candy to the church given out Saturday night…THANK YOU. You are indeed special saints! I admit to being a sinner because this morning I picked out all the good candy in the fellowship hall that was left over.
Have a good week and don’t forget we have a covered dish luncheon this Sunday.
Blessings,
Mike
