Prayer
“And when you pray…”
Matthew 6:5
Dear Friends,
I attended the Hands of Christ benefit concert at James Island Presbyterian Sunday afternoon and someone mentioned Ann Lamont’s book, “Help, Thanks, Wow.” The book is about prayer, the premise being that most of our prayers go like this: help me, help me, help me….thank you, thank you, thank you and end with WOW. In confirmation classes and new member classes I like to suggest that folks try to structure their prayers after the ACTS prayer: adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication. That certainly covers just about everything we need to say, but to be honest, l suspect too many of my prayers are the help me, thank you, wow prayers!
And really, that is not a bad way to communicate with God because I need help every day. I am grateful for my many blessings and the answers to my “help me” prayers cause me to go WOW, and in good reformed tradition, we begin with God and God is deserving of our every WOW.
So when you pause to say a prayer this week, remember the Help, Thanks, Wow prayer.
Stay cool.
Blessings,
Mike
