“Celebrating Freedom”

“You my friends were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature, rather serve one another in love.”

Galatians 5:13

 Dear Friends,

This week we are reminded that as Americans we have freedom to make many choices about how we live. On Friday we celebrate the Fourth of July, a day that honors freedom.

It occurs to me that as Presbyterians we celebrate individual freedoms also. In our  Book of Order, the very first of our Historic Principles of Church Order states that “God alone is the lord of the conscience.”  That means we are free to make choices. It is spelled out this way: “We consider the rights of private judgment, in all matters that respect religion, as universal and unalienable.”

So this Friday I will offer a prayer of gratitude that I am an American AND a Presbyterian!

Have a safe, fun Holiday.

Blessings,

Mike
