
Cemetery Policy
Who is eligible for burial in the New Wappetaw Cemetery?
Active church members, their spouses, and unmarried children may be buried in the Cemetery without a fee.
Non-members and non-active members who are descendants of someone already buried in the Cemetery may be eligible if space is available in their family plot, subject to approval by the Cemetery Committee.
What are the burial fees?
Active Members & Immediate Family: No fee
Non-members with eligible family plots: $500 per person (due before burial unless otherwise arranged)
Ministers or former ministers of New Wappetaw: No fee
Charitable Burial (Potter’s Field): Negotiated on a case-by-case basis
What is the process before a burial can take place?
The mortuary must obtain permission and a signed permit from the Cemetery Committee before any grave excavation begins.
Who must be present at funerals and burials?
New Wappetaw’s minister or at least one church elder shall be present at all funerals and burials held in the Cemetery.
What are the gravestone requirements?
A gravestone must be installed within one year of burial.
A $250 late fee may apply if the gravestone is not placed within that time, unless an extension is granted by the Cemetery Committee.
A photo, sketch, or detailed description of the gravestone must be submitted to the Committee for approval prior to installation.
A signed permit will be issued once approved.
Can artificial flowers be placed at gravesites?
Yes, for special occasions. However, they should be removed within 4 months or they may be taken down by the Cemetery Committee.
How is the Cemetery maintained?
Cemetery upkeep is supported through donations and burial fees. The Cemetery Committee is responsible for perpetual care in keeping with the spirit and intent of our founding members.
Who approves Cemetery decisions?
All actions of the Cemetery Committee must be approved by the session before being carried out.
