Mother’s Day Sermons…. a Preacher’s Dilemma

“Listen my son to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”                                           Proverbs 1:8

Dear Friends,

Mother’s Day is always a challenge for me as a preacher. Do I preach the lectionary (the assigned scripture readings for that Sunday) OR do I find a text that will compliment a Mother’s Day theme? I don’t know the answer. I looked back over my worship bulletins for the last two or three decades and realize I have not been consistent. I was surprised to see how many years Mother’s Day was NOT preached or even mentioned in the church bulletins.

On closer inspection, I discovered that most years, I stuck to the lectionary but was able to say something about mothers in the sermon. In the past I have used litanies that have listed some of the more memorable mothers in the Bible…and there are many to choose from. And some years when I have really pushed the envelope, I have used prayers that described God as our heavenly mother, or I have paraphrased Jesus saying, “Would that I could gather you up as a mother hen gathers her chicks.”

It is encouraging to see how many folks please their moms by coming to church on Mother’s Day. So, if you are a mom, invite your child/children to church this Sunday. If you are a child…BE in church this Sunday!

Have a blessed week,
Mike
